A black screen with the short message in English: “We've disabled your account,” with no option to appeal the decision, appears on the profile of Alesia Burnazi, an activist and communications expert.
The same digital fate befell a series of other accounts critical of the government on Instagram, which have now been completely deleted from Meta's platform. For opposition MP Agron Shehaj, a search on Instagram returns only a blank page with the inscription "User not found", on which users have stamped the word "CENSORED" in red.
Some of the images of these closed profiles are circulating massively on the network in the form of a denunciatory collage, accompanied by the call: "Dictatorship! Don't Silence Us, Dot!!!!!" Activists have meanwhile announced the opening of new pages, which have immediately attracted hundreds of followers.
Affected individuals and IT specialists suspect that we are not dealing with isolated cases, but an unprecedented wave of closures of dozens of critical Instagram accounts. The common denominator of the affected profiles is their involvement and coverage of the recent protests known as the “Flamingo Revolution” and criticism of the government.
According to them, this appears to have been done through a massive campaign of false reporting, known as coordinated abuse, where Meta's algorithmic mechanisms were manipulated to eliminate critical voices and activists in Albania from the virtual space.

“When the government cannot stop information directly, there is a risk that it will do so through mass reporting and algorithms,” said Besmir Semanaj, an IT expert. META did not respond to BIRN’s questions by the time of publication.
Accusations against the government of censorship
The Albanian government's attempt to dominate the social media space is not a new phenomenon. Data obtained by a BIRN investigation suggests that during the heated days of protests, the platforms were flooded with newly created fake profiles between June 28 and 30.

Deputeti Agron Shehaj, llogaria e verifikuar e të cilit numëronte 150 mijë ndjekës dhe gjeneronte dhjetëra milionë shikime në muaj, e bën përgjegjëse të drejtpërdrejtë qeverinë për këtë goditje.
“Një pushtet që është afër fundit ndërmerr masa të tilla diktatoriale,” tha Shehaj për BIRN. “Nuk është sulmi i vetëm ndaj meje, më kanë përjashtuar nga parlamenti për 140 ditë vetëm këtë sesion, Ministria e Financave ka urdhëruar hetim pasuror dhe kanë bërë një sërë kallëzimesh të pabaza në SPAK,” shtoi ai.
Shehaj e cilësoi këtë si një censurë të paprecedentë ndaj drejtuesit të një partie të opozitës. “Absolutisht, nuk ka asnjë dyshim që vjen nga qeveria. Nuk na është dhënë asnjë shpjegim për mbylljen e llogarisë, nuk ka asnjë email, asnjë të dhënë,” tha ai, ndërsa shtoi se do të kontaktonin me META për të kërkuar sqarime.
Njëra prej aktivisteve të bllokuara në Instagram, Burnazi, theksoi se ky fenomen është një goditje e rëndë për lirinë e fjalës.
“Kjo është një censurë digjitale ndaj fjalës së lirë,” u shpreh Burnazi, duke shtuar se sulmi kibernetik i mirëorganizuar ndaj llogarisë së saj pati fillesat që në fund të qershorit.
“Presioni ushtrohet nga struktura specifike që qartazi kanë lidhje me pushtetin. Ky sulm duhet të dënohet, pasi fjala e lirë është në rrezik,” tha ajo duke akuzuar gjithashtu qeverinë.
Manipulimi i algoritmeve të Metës
Ekspertët e teknologjisë dhe sigurisë kibernetike theksojnë se algoritmet e rrjeteve sociale mbeten lehtësisht të manipulueshme nga fushata të tilla të koordinuara. Besmir Semanaj, ekspert IT, thekson se askush nuk e di saktësisht numrin e llogarive të fshira, pasi Meta nuk publikon të dhëna specifike për Shqipërinë.

He brings to mind the case of Vietnam in 2021, when Meta discovered a network that used thousands of fake reports to delete the accounts of activists and government critics.
Orkidea Xhaferaj, a cybersecurity expert at SCiDEV, analyzes that the reports made by activists highlight an abuse specifically coordinated with reports of copyright violations.
“Copyright abuse is one that probably brings a faster reaction than reports of spam or violence, and it doesn't require a very large number of reporters,” Xhaferaj explained.
While she considers the mass removal of content as a direct method of censorship, she adds that concrete facts and national-level civil society coordination are needed to hold Meta accountable.
An effort for accountability is also being made by the European Democratic Party, which, through its Secretary General, Sandro Gozi, officially requested urgent clarifications from META regarding the suspension of the accounts of protest activists and opposition representatives in Albania.
Through a press statement, the European Democratic Party stated that Gozi has sent the matter to the European Commission through a parliamentary question, asking the Commission to seek urgent clarifications from Meta and examine the incident in the context of Albania's EU accession process, fundamental rights and political pluralism.
"When dozens of opposition and activist accounts linked to the same protest movement disappear almost simultaneously, we cannot treat it simply as a technical problem. Meta must explain what happened, and he must do so quickly," Gozi declared.
“We are not making accusations without evidence. But freedom of expression and political pluralism cannot depend on obscure algorithms or moderation systems that can potentially be manipulated through coordinated attacks.
