Progressive Abdul El-Sayed has emerged victorious in a tough Democratic race for Michigan senator. He defeated moderate Rep. Haley Stevens in one of the party's most significant electoral victories. His victory is not just about picking a candidate for a crucial seat. It is also seen as a defeat for the Democratic leadership, a challenge to the influence of big donors and a clear sign that the stance on Israel is becoming one of the deepest divisions within the party.
El-Sayed, a physician, former public health official and outspoken critic of Israeli policy, has managed to rally an unprecedented financial mobilization in favor of his opponent. About $60 million in outside spending went to support Stevens. About $32 million of that went to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the hardline pro-Israel organization that regularly interferes in American elections.
AIPAC's involvement became a central issue of the campaign. To El-Sayed's supporters, the massive funding was evidence that powerful interests were trying to shape the outcome of local elections. To Stevens and her allies, the race presented itself as a battle to maintain a politically more secure and moderate candidacy.
A victory against $60 million
El-Sayed's campaign was based on a clear anti-establishment narrative. He argued that voters, regardless of ideological affiliation, were tired of a political system that favored big money and was distant from the everyday needs of citizens. His advocacy of universal health care, criticism of the financial elite, and rejection of unconditional American support for Israel were the main pillars of his candidacy.
El-Sayed acknowledged, however, the depth of the internal division in the party. After his victory, he stressed that tomorrow should be dedicated to restoring relations between the two wings of the party. Unity, however, will not be easy, perhaps the opposite…
Fear of Democrats
The Democratic leadership had rallied around Stevens, believing that a centrist candidate would have a better chance of holding the seat in the race against Republicans in the general election.
Michigan is one of the critical states that could determine which party will control the Senate.

In the general election, El-Sayed will need more than just the progressive voters who carried him to victory. He will need to unite a deeply divided party, attract centrists and independents, and prove that his policy proposal can win over an entire state.
If he succeeds, his victory will not only secure a crucial seat for Democrats. It will reinforce the idea that the left can be an electoral force even in the most volatile parts of the United States.
