US President Donald Trump said Iran has requested direct talks through mediators to reduce tensions. He said contacts between the two countries were taking place in a "very friendly atmosphere".
Trump attributed this change to US military pressure, claiming that American operations have destroyed a large part of Iran's navy, air force, air defense, and drone and missile production capabilities.
The US president reiterated that Washington will never allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. He warned that if negotiations fail, the US will take further military action. During a speech in Michigan, Trump also attacked former President Barack Obama, saying his policy towards Tehran had been wrong.
"Iran is not bought, but defeated," he said.
