A new escalation in relations between Romania and Russia has continued with the announcement of the expulsion of a diplomat from the Russian embassy, following repeated violations of Romanian airspace by drones. Romania’s Foreign Ministry announced today that it had officially informed the Russian ambassador of the decision, attributing the action to the country’s continued violations of its national airspace.
The development comes as Russia has stepped up its attacks on neighboring Ukraine. According to Romanian authorities, F-16 fighter jets of the Air Force shot down three drones over a three-day period, from Friday to Sunday, after they violated the country's airspace.
Romania, a NATO member, has faced several incidents related to the war in Ukraine, particularly in areas bordering the Danube River. The Russian embassy in Bucharest dismissed the accusations, calling them "baseless" and claiming that Russia has never directed drones at targets in Romania.
