When the Russian military told Maria that her 59-year-old father had been shot on the front lines of the war in Ukraine and later died of his wounds, she was doubly shocked. Not only was she unaware that her father, Yury, had been drafted into the army, but she was also informed that he had been married just two days before he was sent to war.
“I’m still in shock and I still can’t accept what happened,” Maria said, crying at the kitchen table in her small apartment in St. Petersburg. “At first, it seemed like a dream. Even now, sometimes I wake up thinking I must have dreamed it all. But it’s really happening,” she added, sobbing.
The bride, whom Maria says she had never met or heard her father mention, was 22 years younger than him and had become her father's closest legal relative, giving her the right to official compensation. "I have never spoken to this woman," said Maria, 37. CNN is using only her first name for privacy reasons.
“I don't know what to say because I immediately suspected it was a hoax.” CNN said it tried to contact Yury's widow for comment.
When a Russian soldier is killed in battle, his closest relatives receive large sums from the military starting at 5 million rubles ($64,000), compensation intended to reassure recruits that if the worst happens, their loved ones will be taken care of.
But there are growing concerns in Russia that this benefit is increasingly being exploited by ruthless con artists — whom Russian officials and state media call “black widows.” They trick vulnerable men into sham marriages before accompanying them to war, then demand compensation if their new husbands are killed, leaving other relatives out of the picture.
In recent months, Russians have been scandalized by numerous stories about conscripts allegedly engaging in marriage before dying on the front lines, or even getting married on their deathbeds.
In a widely reported "black widow" case last year, a nurse working at a military hospital was fired after being accused of marrying five soldiers under her care before they died from their wounds in order to collect death benefits.
It's an abuse that has touched a nerve in a society that is increasingly alarmed by how the ongoing war in Ukraine - which the Kremlin still calls a "special military operation" - is leaving its mark on life back home.

Varyukhina's status as next of kin was eventually overturned in the courts, but the scandal caused widespread outrage.
But there have also been shocking incidents where members of Russian security forces appear to have been involved in orchestrating “black widow” scams, conspiring with women to send their newly recruited husbands on dangerous missions in exchange for a share of the compensation if they are killed.
In one case last year, Russian media reported on an investigation in Primorsky Krai, in the country’s far east, into an alleged scheme involving a military warrant officer, a sergeant and a military accountant. The three were accused of recruiting vulnerable men, including orphans and people without close relatives, and arranging marriages for them. The recruits were allegedly then sent to high-risk positions on the front lines, where they were more likely to be killed in combat.
