An incredible event occurred on the beach of Marina di Ragusa in Sicily, when large bundles of euro banknotes ended up in the sea and then washed ashore.
According to Italian authorities, the incident began when a small speedboat allegedly ran out of fuel a short distance from the port of Marina di Ragusa. There were four people on board the boat. Two of them got off to get fuel, while another person and a minor remained on board.
As the speedboat was drifting toward shore in the ocean currents, people watching from the shore notified the coast guard, fearing that the boat was in danger of sinking.
When the coast guard ship approached to offer assistance, the two passengers still on the speedboat began throwing dozens of bundles full of banknotes into the sea.
The currents carried the packages to the beach, where holidaymakers rushed to retrieve them. Shortly afterwards, police, carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza officers arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area, collected the money and identified the individuals who had collected some of the banknotes.
According to Italian media, the money was divided into bundles and included banknotes from 5 to 100 euros. Authorities announced that they had seized almost 700,000 euros, without however ruling out the possibility that part of the amount has not yet been identified.
The motorboat was transported to the port of Marina di Ragusa and seized, where a full inspection by specialized teams is ongoing.
3 people were arrested as part of the investigation, while the minor who was on board, according to information so far, is not related to any of the three.
The province of Ragusa, known for its tourist resorts and natural beauty, is located a short distance not only from the coast of North Africa, but also from Malta.
