House Judiciary Committee Democrats are expanding their investigation into Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law. The focus is on the luxury development he wants to build on the coast of Albania, a project that has sparked weeks of protests and accusations that the land was acquired through forged title deeds.
Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said he has new questions about Kushner's "questionable real estate acquisition practices" and has requested access to all records related to his "approval or review" of projects in Albania, including any communications between the U.S. and Albanian governments.
In a letter to Kushner, Raskin said Democrats want to clarify whether “Kushner’s conduct should be investigated under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.” Under U.S. law, it is “unlawful for a U.S. person or company to offer, pay, or promise to pay money or anything of value to any foreign official for the purpose of obtaining or retaining business.”
The letter seeks to expand an investigation Raskin opened in April into what Democrats called Kushner's "blatant conflict of interest." He was serving as the White House peace envoy while also running a private equity firm backed in part by sovereign wealth funds in the Persian Gulf.
"While acting as our nation's chief negotiator to end several international conflicts created or exacerbated by your father-in-law's administration, you have taken the time to start yet another international fraud-related incident yourself," Raskin wrote in the letter, referring to Kushner's efforts in Albania.
Kushner's representatives at his investment firm have not yet commented on the letter.
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly called Raskin's request part of "the same tired narrative that Democrats have pushed against President Trump, his family and his administration for a decade."
"Jared Kushner's personal business activities have nothing to do with his diplomatic engagements, which he carries out on a voluntary basis at the request of the President," Kelly continued, praising what she described as Kushner's "track record" on the Abraham Accords and other initiatives.

Projekti ka shkaktuar më shumë polemika në korrik, kur dolën raportime se një biznesmen, i kërkuar në Shqipëri për pastrim parash dhe rolin e tij të dyshuar në një operacion ndërkombëtar të trafikut së drogës, kishte falsifikuar aktin e pronësisë së tokës për resortin turistik.
Bëhet fjalë për biznesmenin Artur Shehu që ka mohuar çdo shkelje. “Wall Street Journal” raportoi se fshatarët shqiptarë u përpoqën ta paralajmëronin Kushnerin se toka ishte e vjedhur.
Një zëdhënës i grupit të zhvillimit të mbështetur nga Kushner i tha Journal se sistemi ligjor shqiptar është “vendi i duhur për zgjidhjen e çështjeve në lidhje me pronësinë e tokës”, por ata këmbëngulën se “blerjet e tokës u kryen në mënyrë të ligjshme”.
Në letrën e tij drejtuar Kushnerit, Raskin shkruan se i gjithë “episodi pasqyron si mendjelehtësinë tuaj thelbësore si një përfaqësues i dikurshëm i Shteteve të Bashkuara, ashtu edhe oreksin mbizotërues dhe në dukje të pangopur të familjes Trump-Kushner për korrupsion politik dhe financiar.”
“Qeveria e kryeministrit shqiptar Edi Rama, e cila prej kohësh ka kërkuar të ketë ndikim në politikën amerikane, ju dha miratimin, por Kryeministri nuk mundi të fitonte miratimin e elektoratit të tij për projektin tuaj të ëndrrave” – shkruan ai.

Kushner, i cili është i martuar me vajzën e madhe të Trump, Ivanka, themeloi firmën e investimeve Affinity Partners në vitin 2021, pasi kishte shërbyer si këshilltar i lartë gjatë administratës së parë të Trump. Investitori më i madh dhe më i hershëm i Affinity, sipas “The New York Times”, është Fondi i Investimeve Publike të Arabisë Saudite, i udhëhequr nga Princi i Kurorës Mohammed bin Salman, i cili ka investuar afërsisht 2 miliardë dollarë. Fondet sovrane të pasurisë të lidhura me Katarin dhe Emiratet e Bashkuara Arabe kanë investuar gjithashtu.
Që kur Trump u rikthye në Zyrën Ovale vitin e kaluar, Kushner ka punuar si i dërguar i paqes i SHBA-së, duke marrë pjesë në bisedime për t'u dhënë fund konflikteve jashtë vendit, përfshirë edhe me Iranin.
Në letrën e tij të re, Raskin vë në dukje se Kushner nuk i ishte përgjigjur kërkesës fillestare të Komitetit, e cila kërkonte komunikimet e tij me zyrtarë sauditë, emiratë, kataranë ose izraelitë, së bashku me të dhënat financiare që detajonin investitorët e Affinity.
“To give you the benefit of the doubt,” Raskin wrote, “I assume you may have been too distracted and diverted by your repeated failed attempts to negotiate a lasting ceasefire in Iran, Lebanon, or Ukraine to respond.”
Kushner’s team has denied the allegations of wrongdoing. In April, Affinity’s chief legal officer said Kushner had complied “with all applicable laws and requirements and always acted in the best interests of the United States.” A White House spokesman said at the time that Kushner had “sacrificed time with his family and his livelihood” to work on administration initiatives.
As minority members of the House of Representatives, Democrats have no power to order and have limited ability to force Kushner to cooperate. That would change if they win control of the House in the midterm elections in November. Democrats have already made it clear that they have a wide list of targets to investigate if they regain control of one or both chambers of Congress.
