Many world media outlets have paid attention to what has been happening for 38 days now in Tirana, where massive protests continue for the removal of the government and the non-negotiable resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
The Belgian newspaper “Nieuwsblad” writes that since the end of May, protests have been taking place every day in the Albanian capital.
“Since the end of May, there have been demonstrations every day in the capital Tirana. Last Saturday, on the 35th day, the protest reached its peak. Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets, many of them carrying the pink image of a flamingo,” the article says.
It is further explained that although the revolt began as a reaction to the project planned to be built in Zvërnec, Albanians are now demanding the resignation of the prime minister.
“The protest initially focused on ecological concerns. The coastal region in question is a fragile nature reserve, home to one of the last large European populations of flamingos. Therefore, the growing protest movement took on the name “Flamingo Revolution”. However, the protesters are now demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. An anti-corruption investigation is underway into legislative changes that the government implemented in 2024, which make it easier to develop tourist activities in the nature reserve,” writes Belgian media.
"Nieuwsblad" emphasizes that accusations of corruption, concentration of power, and electoral fraud have continued to increase with each year that Rama has remained in power.
