FIFA's unprecedented decision to suspend the ban of American striker Folarin Balogun, following a personal intervention by Donald Trump, is turning the World Cup into a political arena and causing an unprecedented international confrontation.
From the White House, the US president publicly confirmed that he had personally contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino to request a review of the red card. Although Trump was quick to downplay the incident, claiming he had not exerted pressure, his action underscores the way Washington exploits personal relationships to achieve a desired outcome.
In his statements, Trump even claimed that the incident in question was not even a foul, but a simple and inevitable collision between two players who were running fast.
Mobilization of the White House
As the Wall Street Journal reports, shortly after Balogun's suspension, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Andrew Giuliani (head of the White House World Cup task force and son of Rudy Giuliani) contacted Donald Trump by phone. After convincing him that the punishment would reduce the national team's chances of qualifying for the next round, Trump instructed them to find a way to overturn the suspension.
American officials immediately mobilized, engaging Trump's top legal aides to oppose the decision, while also informing the U.S. Soccer Federation of their plan.
The decisive step came when Donald Trump himself exploited his personal relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and called him directly, asking him to intervene and reconsider the suspension. Although in their first conversation, Infantino appeared cautious and noncommittal, in a subsequent call a few days later he informed the US president that FIFA would activate "Article 27" of the Disciplinary Code to suspend the punishment.
"A big thank you to FIFA for doing the right thing and correcting a great injustice!" Trump wrote on social media on Sunday afternoon.
Reactions from fans and teams
However, the move sparked a backlash. Fans around the world spoke out about state interference, accusing Trump of influencing the rules of the game, irreparably damaging the credibility of the World Cup.

Paraardhësi i Infantinos si president i FIFA-s, zvicerani Sepp Blatter kujtoi se "kartonat e kuq nuk anulohen nga telefonatat politike". "Nëse një president i Shteteve të Bashkuara ndërhyn te presidenti i FIFA-s - dhe një futbollist papritmas lirohet nga akuzat para një ndeshjeje eliminatore të Kupës së Botës - atëherë pyetja është e pashmangshme: Quo vadis, FIFA? Many fans argued that Balogun was simply the latest player to fall victim to the VAR system and that he had no intention of hurting Muharremovic, while recalling that Lionel Messi escaped punishment for a similar incident in Argentina's first match.
It is true that contact between players often appears very harsh on review, while in the era before the introduction of technology, such signs went unnoticed.
