Italy is facing a new wave of femicide. 6 women have been killed by their partners or ex-partners since August 15.
The latest two murders of women took place on Tuesday. A 72-year-old woman was stoned to death by her 74-year-old husband in a field near Cosenza, Calabria, while a 50-year-old Polish woman was stabbed to death by her 69-year-old Tunisian husband in Colleferro, south of Rome.
On Monday, a 39-year-old woman was killed by her 43-year-old ex-husband near Venice after she repeatedly reported him to the police for domestic violence. It later emerged that since 2002, three other women had reported him for violence.
Femicide has been included as a new crime in the Italian Penal Code and is being treated as a national emergency, as deadly violence against women has reached new levels in the country, Italian news agency ANSA reported.
However, the agency added that a campaign to educate young people about healthy relationships with the opposite sex was halted when the government made parental approval a condition for students to participate in it in Italian schools. ©LAPSI.al
