Raheem Sterling is set to face British justice after a road accident last May: the former Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea striker crashed his Lamborghini in Hampshire and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He has now been formally charged with dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide intended for inhalation and refusing to provide a sample after refusing to submit to a breathalyzer test. He is due to appear in court on September 15 and faces up to two years in prison.

Dashcam footage has helped authorities reconstruct the crash involving the England footballer, who was driving his Lamborghini under the influence of drugs. The crash happened on May 28 at around 9am and, fortunately, no other vehicles were involved and no one was injured. Sterling was arrested at the scene after police intervened and has now been charged with three counts in total: he was released on bail at the time, but now faces a prison sentence, the Sun reports.

Among the charges is possession of nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas” (in Italy it is “balloon drug”), a substance included in the category C of exemptions in the United Kingdom, so its possession and inhalation are illegal, but which is unfortunately quite popular among footballers of a certain level. The former Chelsea player is currently without a club after the end of his experience with Feyenoord, which lasted only a year, and risks serious legal consequences. If found guilty of dangerous driving, he could be sentenced to two years in prison.
