Italy is set to tighten rules for pedestrians using their phones while crossing the street. According to the draft of the new Highway Code, using a cell phone or other electronic devices that distract attention while crossing the street will be considered a violation and the fine will start at 75 euros.
According to foreign media reports, the rules will also include the use of tablets, laptops and cameras. Meanwhile, hands-free phone calls will be allowed, while the use of mobile phones in emergencies will be an exception.
The restrictions will not apply to pedestrians using their phones while walking on the sidewalk. The draft also stipulates that pedestrians, before crossing the road, must make sure that the driver of the vehicle has seen them and intends to stop. They also must not be unnecessarily delayed while crossing. The new code is expected to be adopted by mid-October and aims to reduce accidents caused by distraction on the road.
