The first case of West Nile Fever in Albania has been registered in Korça, where a 72-year-old man has been infected with the virus and is hospitalized, where he is receiving medical treatment.
Epidemiologist Adela Vasili, from the Institute of Public Health, has provided details regarding the case, emphasizing that so far no other cases have been confirmed, nor are there any suspected cases.
She also noted that the disease is transmitted through mosquitoes carrying the virus that they pick up from infected birds or horses.
"We have no other confirmed or suspected cases of West Nile Fever. West Nile Fever is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes carrying the virus that they pick up from infected birds or horses."
"It is suspected that the elderly man was infected as a result of a mosquito bite, as he has not traveled abroad. It is transmitted only by mosquitoes and not from person to person," she said.
It is reported that the elderly man initially showed health problems and was taken to Korça Hospital, where tests confirmed the presence of the virus in his body. So far, this remains the only case identified in Albania.
