A single father left his 11-year-old daughter home alone for two days so he could travel with Pafos FC to Albania for a football match against Dinamo. He was arrested upon his return to Cyprus as he faces charges filed against him at the Pafos District Court.
He was charged with abandoning a child under the age of 16. A police representative told the court that between August 19 and 20, he abandoned the child and exposed her to dangers in a way that could have caused serious damage to her health.
Following his arrest this morning, when the delegation returned to Paphos Airport, the father was taken directly to the Paphos District Court, where he was briefed on the case. He will appear again in court on September 18, when he will have to answer to the charge of child abandonment. Until then, the court ordered his release on bail, on payment of 15,000 euros.
It was the neighbours who told the police that the girl appeared to have been alone and unsupervised at home for two days. Officers from the Paphos Police Department who went to the scene found the 11-year-old at home. She told them that she was alone and that her father had gone to watch a Paphos FC match in Albania. The police immediately notified the Social Welfare Services, who took over the protection and care of the child. ©LAPSI.al
