BUSHATI: The grotesque and criminal side of the Rama-Veliaj clash

Andi Bushati 2026-11-03 09:21:00

Anyone who has seen the sentimental whining of some media outlets and opinion makers about the violations of the rights of prisoner Erion Veliaj, at a time when young people have been shot in the body, protesters have been beaten or maimed in this country, has rubbed their eyes trying to understand what parallel planes they are living on.

Anyone who has been fed the bombastic headlines about Lali's cell change has been left unscathed when they saw that this noise was being produced by the same public figures who show no empathy for the violence inflicted on citizens, and who are even willing to glorify the state's whip.

Anyone who has heard talk of "human rights violations" after the incumbent mayor was restricted from meetings and stopped receiving outside food has laughed as if it were a bad joke in an environment where crime is rampant.

In fact, that's how it was until yesterday. But the grotesque fable of Lali's rape ended up being like that when he revealed the name of his "persecutor" with his own mouth.

He told us that after the imprisonment, the cell search, the transfer, the attempted dismissal, the quarrel with Ulsi, the "enemy" at first, and the quarrel with Toni, the "friend", afterwards, there remains only one man: Edi Rama.

It is precisely at this change that this story, which may initially seem ridiculous, automatically turns into a criminal one. How can a prime minister also take on the role of prison director? How can he threaten, simply on the basis of paranoia, with a long sentence for overthrowing the constitutional order? How can he send messengers to the cells, and not just any people, but the Minister of Justice himself? How can he seize, on a whim, the most important local government post in the country?

All these questions that do not need an answer go beyond the political clash between two people, the personal conflict between them, the hatred or rivalry. They are the most significant reflection of the regime in which we live.

To better understand this, it is worth focusing on the concrete ultimatum that Rama sent to Veliaj: to stop allusions to his overthrow, such as the status that greeted Vučić's defeat; to hand over the command of the municipality; to admit the "crime" of instigating the protests.

If you analyze it, all three are ultimatums that stem from a dictatorial mindset.

From the beginning of the flamingo revolution, Serbs and Greeks, Russians and Iranians, Muslims and anti-Trumpists, organized crime and the enemies of Albania were accused of instigating it. The synoptic picture of this hallucinatory scenario certainly needed an enemy within the party ranks. And who better to take on this role than Veliaj. Not only did he perfectly meet the conditions to serve as Iago, but moreover, he was already stained as a thief, which completed the fable of a protest financed with dirty money.

If the three ultimatums sent to his former dolphin are a reflection of an autocrat who has lost his balance, the way Rama is trying to put them into practice testifies to his almost dictatorial power. By overcoming every link, by subverting every procedure, he has personally dealt with the relocation of the detainee, with the food he will eat, with the meeting schedules with his wife, with the elimination of the lawyer, with the criminalized neighbor he will have in the next cell, by predetermining everything with the greed of a sick mind. And if you add to these details the latest evidence that he was the same one who gave the green light for "the hanging of Lali from a tree" (which would explain the two standards that SPAK used for a more serious case like Balluk's), the picture becomes even more serious.

Because in this case, the issue is not what the media, which paradoxically stands between Edit and Erion, ridiculously tried to pump up, that of the violation of the latter's rights. The unfortunate fate of prisoner Veliaj would seem like a debate about the sex of angels, in front of the rapes and massacres we have seen in the last two weeks. It only gains weight if it serves as a mirror for us to see the system we live in. And in this, the problem is not that Rama usurped the role of Lali's cell guard, but that he is behaving like the director of our common prison.

Blendi Kajsiu: No to violence, yes to organization!

What social protest needs today, more than violence, is the organization of a broad anti-system front that brings together representatives of various social groups whose common denominator is dissatisfaction with the functioning of the current political and economic regime. This front, which could be called the Flamingo Front, should have representatives from students, teachers, environmentalists, civil society, new political parties such as the Together Movement, workers, farmers, and representatives of communities whose lands are being plundered through elite tourism models.

Andi Bushati: The collapse of Vučić, an instruction manual for us in Tirana

Serbia is a typical example of showing that these types of powers cannot be defeated by normal means, that the method to combat them is not to chase after elections, like a bull after a red rag, but to destroy, weaken, delegitimize and subjugate them, through methods that are mostly considered illegal or violent by the ruling class.

How Rama is leading the country towards civil strife

Insisting on violence, on arming civilians, on paying police officers as if they were mercenaries, alone does not produce peace. Edi Rama's fear of where he will end up when he is no longer prime minister does not have to become Albania's nightmare.

Andi Bushati: Why stones and Molotov cocktails became inevitable

This youth revolt has had a great merit. It made known to the general public the most criminal side of this regime that had until now been preserved in the most secretive recesses. If the extremely peaceful revolution of the flamingos showed us that this government was no longer popular, its radical epilogue, with stones and Molotov cocktails, is serving to bring to light that the autocrat is capable of using any means to stay in power.
