The Swiss government announced today its intention to abolish the marital status of "divorced people", supporting an initiative by liberal MP Nadine Gobbet.
Gobbet, of the Liberal Democratic Party, had expressed her disagreement with the fact that divorcees must declare in official documents and forms that they are "divorced", even several years after their divorce.
The MP argues that this category of marital status is unnecessary because divorce is a settled legal matter. Requiring someone to identify as “divorced” permanently would mean that a private event was “administratively perpetuated,” she said.
Gobbe suggested that divorced people should be returned to the "single" category on official forms. ©LAPSI.al
