Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja, known as the "wolf child of the Sierra Morena," has died at the age of 80 in Ourense, Spain. His story was one of the most unique and rare cases of a child who lived for years away from human society, growing up among wolves.
According to the Spanish website “20minutos,” he spent 12 years in the wild, without human presence and with only a pack of wolves as his only companions. He later stated that those were the happiest years of his life, in contrast to his difficult childhood, which was marked by misery, abuse, and hunger.
Marcos was born in 1946 in Aniora, Córdoba. At the age of just 3, he lost his mother, who died giving birth to the family's 8th child. His father remarried, but his stepmother, who already had a child from a previous marriage, allegedly abused him from a young age.
In the following years, the family settled in Fuencaliente, in the Sierra Morena region. According to the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, when Marcos was just 6 years old, his family sold him to a cattle farmer, who sent him to live with a shepherd in a cave in the mountainous region of Cardenia.
Shortly after, the shepherd died and the little boy was left alone in the wild. It was then, as reported by the Spanish media, that he came into contact with wolves, who, according to his account, accepted him and took care of him as a member of the pack. "The first contact I remember with wolves is that I fell asleep with their cubs," he said in an interview in 2010.
Marcos managed to survive in the difficult area, having already acquired basic knowledge from the shepherd. For 12 years he lived isolated from people, learning to move in nature, find food and communicate with sounds.
He said he had literally lived like a wolf. He had developed a unique way of communicating with animals, using sounds and howls, while also learning to imitate birdsong, call deer, and make improvised flutes out of wood.
"If I wanted to fish, I went to the river. If I wanted a rabbit, I caught it. If I wanted a deer, I called out to 'my parents,' the wolves, with howls," he confessed.
In 1965, at the age of 19, he was spotted by the Spanish Gendarmerie. Since he was screaming and unable to communicate, the police tied him up and took him to Fuencaliente. Nuns and a priest tried to teach him to speak, dress himself, walk upright, and use cutlery again.
He was then hospitalized at the Vallejo Foundation Convalescent Hospital in Madrid and, when he was assessed as fit to return to society, he was transferred to Mallorca, where he lived in a hostel and worked to cover his expenses.
However, life among people was never easy for him. He himself described feeling like people didn't understand him and that he had difficulty adapting to the rules of society.
Despite the difficulties, Marcos dedicated a large part of his life to nature and was invited by municipalities and organizations to speak about his experience with animals. He had a special weakness for children, to whom he often spoke about the need to love and care for animals.
People who knew him described him as a "Spanish Mowgli", a man connected to the earth, the air and nature. He never hid that the happiest years of his life were those spent with the wolves.
In his last years he lived in Rande, near Ourense, where he was cared for by Manuel Barandela Losada, a retired police officer whom he called “boss.” After his death, a Dutch family took on the responsibility of supporting him.
The story of Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja has been the subject of academic studies, books and film productions. Professor Gabriel Yaner Manila, from the University of the Balearic Islands, wrote a doctoral thesis on his story and later turned it into the book "I Played with Wolves". In 2010, his life was brought to the big screen with the film "Entrelobos" by Gerardo Olivares, in which he himself appeared at the end of the film. ©LAPSI.al
