From sensual to symbol of power/ The story of the fan, the accessory that saves

It's a practical, indispensable tool for dealing with the increasingly frequent heat waves. On the crowded subway, sweat drips from our foreheads and the air is stifling, so it's increasingly common to take a small rectangular object out of our bag and open it. A moment later, a light breeze cools us down, bringing relief. Fan coolers are increasingly popular, creating a flow of air around us that naturally cools us.

The wind vane, a symbol of ancient elegance, is back in fashion. There are classic folding wind vanes and fixed, rigid and non-folding ones, while brisé wind vanes are undoubtedly classic, made exclusively with carved sticks joined by a ribbon, without the traditional decorated sheets.

In Greenwich, southeast London, is the Windmill Museum, the only museum in the world dedicated entirely to them. Founded in 1991 by collectors Helen and Dicky Alexander, it houses thousands of windmills from different eras and cultures. A place that preserves centuries of history in fashion, craft, design and culture.

Paris once had a museum, the “Musée de l'Éventail de Paris” (Atelier Anne Hoguet), a historic workshop located on Boulevard de Strasbourg with a collection of 15,000 works.

The cult stores for windbreaker enthusiasts are in Paris and Madrid.

"Everyone has a fan here in Spain. Children, adults, young people, men... Why? Because it's hot," sums up Arturo Llerandi, owner of the fan shop "Casa de Diego", an institution located in the heart of Madrid for more than 200 years. Prices can reach up to 6,000 euros for the most luxurious ones.

History

Made of wood, fabric, feathers or paper, used by women as well as men, wind chimes have been used over the centuries to cool themselves, but have also taken on social, political and even military functions.

The oldest wind chimes date back to ancient Egypt. Eight wind chimes were found in the tomb of Tutankhamun, along with descriptions of their use painted on the walls. Of various sizes, often made of feathers and precious stones, they were symbols of power, objects of great value reserved for the royal family or military officials (the more decorated the wind chime, the more influential the person).

Edhe dekorimi i saj kishte kuptim.

It was in Spain, in the 19th century, that production developed on a large scale. After the French Revolution, French artisans left the country to settle in Spain, especially in Valencia, and the city's manufacturing factory, the Real Fábrica de Abanicos, became the largest in Europe. In the early 20th century, feather fans briefly took center stage, as did beautiful leaves painted on silk, inspired by Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Then they faded.

Today, Spain and Japan continue to be the largest producers of wind chimes, where this accessory has returned to daily use: practical, refined and ecological. ©ANSA, LAPSI.al

Instead of taking care of buildings that threaten citizens aesthetically and physically, the Prime Minister and his Municipality in Durrës order millions of euros to be spent on building concrete walls that hide the sea and disfigure the city.
