Sotheby's auction house in New York announced today that the "famous revenge dress" worn by Princess Diana after Prince Charles' public confession of infidelity will go up for auction on December 9.
The price of this black dress with a wide neckline, signed by Christina Stambolian, is estimated to be between $150,000 and $300,000 (129,000 – 259,000 euros), Sotheby's said in a press release.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Scotland, which specializes in mental health problems.
Before this auction, the dress will be presented in London between September 18 and 24, in Hong Kong (October 1-15), in Geneva (November 6-11) and in New York (from December 2).
The "People's Princess" wore this dress, breaking the codes of the British royal family during a charity gala in June 1994, after her husband Charles admitted his infidelity on television.
"Princess Diana turned this dress into one of the most powerful messages she ever sent," said Morgan Halimi, head of fashion at Sotheby's.
“What emerged as an international viral moment also gave everyone, but especially women, permission to use fashion beyond simple decoration, in a much more intentional and meaningful way: as a shield, as a weapon, or as both at the same time.”
The dress had already been auctioned off to benefit cancer and AIDS charities in June 1997, shortly before Diana's death in a car accident in Paris on August 31, aged 36. ©LAPSI.al
