Drought and flood/ How the climate has changed in the last 45 years in Albania

Albania is experiencing an increasingly warm and variable climate. A study based on temperature and precipitation data for the period 1979-2023 shows that temperatures have increased across the country, with the most pronounced changes in the mountainous and eastern areas. At the same time, average annual precipitation has increased, but this does not mean that Albania is necessarily becoming wetter. Dry months remain frequent, while precipitation tends to be concentrated in fewer but potentially more intense episodes.

Over the past 45 years, Albania's climate has shown significant changes, especially in temperature and rainfall patterns. An analysis of the period 1979-2023, presented in the study Assessing Climate Change in Greece and Albania by Temperature and Rainfall Spatiotemporal Patterns and Trends, provides a clear picture of these changes.

One of the most visible trends is the increase in average annual temperatures across the Albanian territory. Although warming is present throughout the country, it is not the same everywhere. Mountainous and higher altitude areas, especially in the eastern part of Albania, have recorded the strongest warming signals.

Korça results in the prefecture with the highest temperature increase, at +2.4°C, followed by Kukës at +2.1°C. In the central prefectures, the increase is more moderate, around 1.4-1.7°C, while the coastal areas and southwestern parts have recorded smaller increases.

These changes are particularly evident in recent decades. For Tirana, the data show a clear upward trend in the average annual temperature, which has become more pronounced since the late 1990s and over the last two decades. This indicates that the warming is not an evenly distributed change throughout the period, but has become particularly evident in recent years.

Another interesting indicator comes from the monthly temperature analysis in Tirana. Of the 540 months from 1979-2023, 41% were classified as warmer than the climate norm, while 30% were normal and 29% were colder. With the exception of May and September, which appeared more often as normal months, the other months have more often had warmer than average climate characteristics.

The impacts also extend to forests and biodiversity. Higher temperatures and extended periods without precipitation can increase the water stress of vegetation and create more favorable conditions for forest fires. For aquatic ecosystems, changes in the amount and rhythm of precipitation can affect the regime of rivers, wetlands, and habitats that depend on seasonal flows.

At the same time, a warmer and more unstable climate could favor the increase in extreme events. Changes in atmospheric conditions could be associated with a higher risk of phenomena such as storms, floods, strong winds, hail and lightning.

Another important aspect is that climate change does not occur equally throughout Albania. The data show clear differences between areas. Korça and Kukës show the largest increases in temperature, while Fier, Vlora and Gjirokastra have the largest increases in average annual precipitation. This means that adaptation measures cannot be the same for every territory.

In some territories, the priority may be drought and water resource management, while in others, flooding, erosion or forest management. For this reason, local climate data are important for planning adaptation measures.

In the coming years, the changes are expected to become even more pronounced. Climate projections for the region indicate the possibility of a significant increase in average temperatures by the end of the century, if current climate change trends continue.

This makes it imperative that climate change is not just treated as a future issue. Data from the last 45 years shows that changes are already visible. Temperatures are rising, warm spells are becoming more common, and precipitation patterns are changing.

For Albania, the main challenge is to understand not only how much the climate is changing, but also what this change means for each territory and ecosystem. Continuous monitoring of temperature, precipitation and extreme events can help predict risks and design adaptation measures. /Taken from klimasot.al
