The leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Bedri Hamza, has announced a new phase of PDK's political action, accusing the Vetëvendosje Movement of violating constitutional deadlines and blocking the constitution of the Kosovo Assembly.
During a statement from the plenary hall of the Parliament, Hamza said that PDK will no longer be satisfied with demands for respect for legality, but will take concrete steps to restore it.
"We have demanded that legality be respected. From today, we will act to restore legality," declared Hamza.
According to him, all constitutional deadlines for the constitution of the Assembly have passed, while he accused the incumbent Government led by Albin Kurti of behaving as if the institutional situation in the country is normal.
Hamza stressed that PDK will not allow, as he put it, "violation of the Constitution to become a practice," warning of the use of all democratic and institutional means.
One of the options that PDK is considering is addressing the issue in the Constitutional Court. PDK MP, Blerta Deliu-Kodra, has stated that the party is considering all actions that may be in conflict with the Constitution and the modalities that it will follow.
According to a ruling by the Constitutional Court, the Kosovo Assembly must be constituted within 30 days of the certification of the election results. The constitutive session began on August 6, while its chairman, Avni Dehari, has set September 9 as its continuation.
On the other hand, the Vetëvendosje Movement has argued that the 30-day deadline should be calculated from the start of the constitutive session.
The institutional crisis is also related to the election of the new president of Kosovo. The agreement between the LVV and the LDK for the consensual candidate, Bekim Sejdiu, was called into question after six LDK MPs declared that they would not support him.
If the Assembly fails to elect a new president, Kosovo could go to elections again, facing another serious institutional crisis.
