Erjon Veliaj has issued another public denunciation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, as a second rejection of the offer that came to him in prison through Toni Gogu. While he rejects the proposal made to delegate the municipality to Arbër Hajdar, the letter makes it clear that the mayor is convinced that Edi Rama is behind his imprisonment.
"Shame that the CM deals with the internments himself," he writes in the letter. Veliaj refers to the transfer to the Fier detention center, for which he holds Edi Rama responsible.
"If R. thinks that by removing me and isolating me from the family he becomes great – he belittles himself (he lowers himself, translation by Lapsi.al) – and the prison guards mock him," writes Veliaj.
But a sign that he directly blames the prime minister for his imprisonment is the question he raises in the letter: "What 'honor' should I recognize from the PM? That he negotiates with prosecutors about how many charges I will have and how many years I will receive?".
The accusation is serious and is being made for the first time these days after his transfer to the Fier cells. The mayor seems convinced that Rama is in contact with the prosecutors who have brought numerous charges against him and is conspiring with them. It is this conviction that seems to have derailed Erjon Veliaj, made him openly challenge Prime Minister Rama, personally attacking him as a man without dignity, whom even the prison guards mock. It remains to be seen how far his public denunciation will go.
