Jorge Messi was much more than just the father of Argentina's greatest footballer. For more than two decades, he was the man behind many of the most important decisions of his career, from taking a huge family risk to move to Spain to negotiating deals with some of the most powerful players in world football. But his life before all that was completely different.
From the Rosario factory to world football
Jorge Messi, who has died at the age of 68, was born in 1958 in Rosario, Argentina, to a working-class family. Before his son's football talent changed everyone's lives, he worked in the industrial sector, in a factory, rising to the position of supervisor.
With his wife, Celia Cuccitini, they had four children: Rodrigo, Matias, Lionel and Maria Sol.
Football entered the father-son relationship very early. When Lionel was still a small child, Jorge trained him at “Grandoli”, the first team he played for. It quickly became clear that the little boy had an unusual talent. However, along with this, a very serious obstacle appeared.
Lionel's treatment and the great family danger
