The tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply. Washington launched a wave of air strikes on more than 80 Iranian military targets. The US blamed Tehran for attacks on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation hit more than 60 Revolutionary Guard naval vessels. Iranian media reported that the attacks affected the areas of Qeshm, Bandar Abbas and Sirik, where there were injuries. Iran responded immediately, announcing that it had launched missiles and drones at 85 US targets in Bahrain and Kuwait, including the US Navy headquarters and an air base. Tehran also accused the US of violating a memorandum of understanding signed last month.
The escalation comes despite an agreement reached last month between the US and Iran to extend the ceasefire and reduce tensions in the region. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte supported Washington's actions, calling the attacks "absolutely necessary." Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, he said the US response was justified. He said Iran had violated the ceasefire by attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Rutte's statement is expected to add to debates over developments in the Middle East, as tensions in the Persian Gulf continue to raise concerns about the security of international oil transport.
