Ukrainian drones have struck Russia's largest oil refinery in Omsk, located deep inside Russian territory in Siberia, in one of the largest Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The news was announced by the Ukrainian military, but local Russian authorities also confirmed the attack.
In a statement, Ukraine's General Staff said the attack caused a fire at the Omsk refinery, which is located about 2,700 km from Russia's border with Ukraine and close to Russia's border with Kazakhstan.
In a post on Telegram, the governor of the Omsk region, Vitaly Khochenko, did not specify what the target of the attack was, but said that several Ukrainian drones arrived in the "northern industrial zone of Omsk," where the refinery is located.
He also said the full impact of the attack was being assessed and emergency services were called in. Sources told Reuters that the Omsk refinery, owned by Gazpromneft, processed about 460,000 barrels of oil per day last year.
