Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has returned to the issue of the European Union's strategy for Ukraine, through a letter addressed to the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa.
In the letter, Meloni emphasizes the need for Europe to have a common position and speak with one voice on the conflict in Ukraine, describing this as an immediate necessity, in light of recent developments.
"Given recent developments, I feel compelled to return to an issue that I have repeatedly raised in the European Council. It is about the need for Europe to speak with one voice on Ukraine. This is now an urgent necessity," the Italian prime minister writes.
Meloni further warns that the lack of coordination between European countries creates an image of a divided Europe and ultimately favors those who want the war to continue.
"To give the image of a Europe that moves forward without coordination means to favor those who want the war to continue. This is unacceptable, at a time when human lives and the future of our security are at stake," she emphasizes.
At the end of the letter, she clarifies that her request is not related to securing a position for Italy in any of the discussion formats on Ukraine, or to a personal role in this process.
"I am not seeking a position for Italy in one form or another. On the contrary, if this could make my request more credible, I am ready to clarify that I do not seek such a role either for myself or for Italy," Meloni concludes.
