Paraguayan President Santiago Peña announced his resignation in a message on the X platform, amid the scandal surrounding the bankruptcy of Ueno Bank.
"I have made the decision to submit my resignation with the aim of preserving institutions and social peace," the president declared.
"My greatest desire is to guarantee the return of these funds, that the Deposit Guarantee Fund fulfills its mission, and that public funds, as well as resources that belong to all Paraguayans, are protected," Peña added in his speech.
Peña was very close to being removed through impeachment proceedings and had remained politically isolated.
Even his own party had joined the motion for his dismissal, presented by the opposition.
The Central Bank of Paraguay intervened in the activities of Ueno Bank after finding that it had violated minimum solvency requirements.
This decision caused a crisis that has left about 3 million bank customers, in a country of 6.5 million inhabitants, unable to access their bank accounts.
