Life can change at any moment. Leonardo Bonucci knows this well, who, in one of the most important periods of his career, faced a situation that turned everything upside down. The former Juventus, Milan and Italian national team defender, together with his family, was forced to face the illness of his second son, Matteo. The entire football world expressed solidarity with Leonardo and his wife, Martina. Today, that period is only a bitter memory for the family, as the little one overcame his health problems and is now well. He can also play sports, respecting the necessary care measures. What happened taught everyone a lesson in strength and love, strengthening the family bond even more. Today, Leo speaks about this story with more calm, with the awareness of someone who has managed to avoid a tragedy. He also shares the experience to convey the lessons he has learned by experiencing everything on his own skin.
Leonardo Bonucci has once again touched on this sad family event, which fortunately had a happy ending. The problems began during a happy period in his professional life, when his importance in the international arena was growing significantly. “It was a special summer, that of 2016. In the European Championship, I had scored the first penalty of my career in the quarter-finals against Germany, which increased my international profile. After the competition ended, with Manchester City interested in me, we went on holiday to Formentera. There Matteo started to feel unwell, he seemed somewhat detached from the environment,” he told the Il Fienile podcast. “One morning he coughed up a white liquid. After the second episode, we called the emergency medical service. They suspected meningitis, but he had no fever.”
After returning to Italy, the situation did not improve and other worrying signs appeared. Matteo lost his balance and lacked strength, to the point that he could not even pick up a biscuit. At that moment, the situation unfortunately began to become clearer, as the pediatrician suspected a possible neurological problem. Thus began the path of medical treatment and the bitter discovery that made surgical intervention necessary. “We urgently took him to the hospital. After the examinations, the professor informed us that Matteo had an eight-centimeter mass near the cerebellum, the size of a cup. Out of despair, I punched the wall. He had to be operated on urgently. The operation was supposed to last three hours, but it lasted more than seven. During all that time, we experienced extraordinary anxiety and uncertainty.”
Everything went well and little Matteo gave Leonardo his trust even before the operation, imitating the roar of a lion. Fortunately, the other two operations he had to undergo were also successful. “Fortunately, the operation went well, although he had to undergo two more operations to normalize the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid.” Once the danger was overcome, everything started to go in the right direction, while sport became part of his life. “Today he is 12 years old and, despite the limitations he has in terms of contact sports, he is well and plays tennis. To return the love and care he has received to others, my wife Martina has walked 575 kilometers along the Po River to raise funds for the Regina Margherita Hospital.”
This is a story that conveys a lesson in life and gratitude, but also a message for all those who are facing similar health problems. At that time, the Bonucci family often received warmth and support from fans, including those of opposing teams. In such circumstances, the colors of the shirts lost their importance and rivalry took a back seat. It is not easy to talk about an experience that has left such a deep mark on you, but Leonardo Bonucci has told his story in a simple and honest way, also to give hope to many people who are going through difficult times due to illnesses. A united and strong family is an important starting point to face everything in the right way.
