Greece lowers food prices, Rama: We will not intervene, the "system" does not allow us

Greece lowers food prices, Rama: We will not intervene, the "system"

A national initiative to reduce the prices of basic consumer products has come into force in Greece as of Monday, August 31. More than 1,740 product codes have been included in the scheme so far, with an average reduction of 9.5%. The Greek government's initiative was reached after negotiations with over 100 supply companies, 12 supermarket chains and three toy and school supply chains and will last until the end of December 2026.

The list includes 875 products from well-known brands, where the initial average discount of 6.6% reaches approximately 9% after the contribution of supermarkets, while for specific products the discounts range from 5% to 44%.

Also included are 405 school items with an average discount of 12%, 360 private label products with an 8% discount, and 100 meat codes with an average reduction of around 7.5%.

The Greek government has avoided setting a ceiling price to determine how much bread, milk or meat should cost, avoiding conflict with business. Instead, it has done something much more practical: it has negotiated with producers, suppliers and supermarkets and built a voluntary but organized scheme, where companies undertake specific discounts for specific products and for a defined period.

Greek Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos, speaking to Greek media, described the measure as a direct intervention to relieve families.

"The national initiative to reduce the prices of basic daily consumption products and school supplies gives a breather to families and citizens who are being tested by the high cost of living," he said, adding that it concerns "1,740 products with an average price reduction of 9.5%."

Products that are part of this controlled price list will have a special sign on the shelf, while through the state-run online platform "PosoKanei" the consumer can see the prices, the percentage of the discount, the company and the supermarket where it is applied. The aim is for the discount to be measurable and controllable.

Greece lowers food prices, Rama: We will not intervene, the "system"

In Athens, the government is afraid that if it burdens the citizen with high prices, then it will face the dissatisfaction of its citizens; it will be punished with a vote or with street protests. While in Tirana, the government does not add water to the fire. Because they buy the vote, while the protestor is still seen as weak, as a force that can be divided, compromised with money or lynched./Lapsi.al

It is the first time that Albanians feel they can shape the national debate without waiting for political parties to take the lead. Experience teaches us that democracy depends not only on elections, but also on active citizenship among them.

Greece lowers food prices, Rama: We will not intervene, the "system" does not allow us

The Greek government has reduced the prices of more than 1,700 products through an agreement with industry, suppliers and supermarkets; on the other hand, the Albanian government says it cannot intervene in prices because the "system" forbids it and promises only "transparency", at a time when Albanians are paying more for food than the European Union average and with price increases much higher than their neighbors.
