Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, says hackers have stolen about $6.3 billion in what appears to be the largest cryptocurrency heist ever recorded.
The company, which was co-founded by Chinese-Canadian billionaire Changpeng Zhao, suspended deposits and withdrawals on Thursday and said it would cover all losses. It told Al Jazeera in a statement that users' funds were "safe."
Two US blockchain analysis firms have claimed that the attack originated in North Korea. But how did it happen and what does it mean for the cryptocurrency market? Here's what you need to know.
What happened?
Blockchain analysis firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis say the bulk of the theft took place over about 20 minutes, starting late Thursday. “A hacker moved approximately $6.36 billion from Binance wallets to 10 blockchains,” TRM reported.
This surpasses the previous record of $1.5 billion, which was stolen from the Bybit exchange in February 2025.
Binance said about $3 billion of that amount has been frozen, including more than $2.3 billion from stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle, according to Reuters news agency.
Binance has not said what happened to the remaining $3.3 billion. It warned in X that the $6.3 billion figure “may continue to grow” as the company works to track down and freeze more assets.
Who committed the robbery and how?
North Korea.
According to firms that track funds. TRM said it had assessed with a "high probability" that the attack was carried out by TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking unit linked to the Lazarus Group.
According to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the Lazarus Group “targets and compromises entities primarily in South Korea and South Korean interests for espionage, disruption, and destruction.”
It also conducts cyber operations for financial gain, including targeting cryptocurrency exchanges, the CFR says.
The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the Lazarus Group in 2019, saying it was controlled by North Korea's main intelligence agency. North Korea regularly denies involvement in cyberattacks.
However, Chainalysis came to the same conclusion. The FBI also blamed the same unit for the Bybit hack in 2025. TRM said the attackers ordered Binance wallets to be emptied into wallets they controlled, mirroring the Bybit cyberattack.
Cili ishte qëllimi i sulmit?
Insurance offers limited protection, as most crime and cyber insurance policies do not cover stolen cryptocurrencies, and cryptocurrency-specific coverage remains a specialized business offered primarily by specialist insurers.
Thefts are common. Hackers stole $2.87 billion in cryptocurrency in nearly 150 attacks in 2025, according to TRM's 2026 Cryptocurrency Crime Report.
Binance itself has faced legal troubles. Founder Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty in 2023 to a felony related to failing to prevent money laundering on the platform. U.S. President Donald Trump pardoned him in 2025. On Friday, Binance said it was coordinating with law enforcement and remained on track to resume withdrawals within 45 hours. ©LAPSI.al
