At first, everything seemed to be going according to plan. It was mid-February 2025, a few weeks after Donald Trump returned to the White House, when economic advisers delivered to the president a series of news that any administration would have welcomed: American household incomes were rising, pension funds were strengthening, and the economy was doing better than expected.
"So many good things," Trump would comment, seeing the start of his second term as the foreshadowing of a chapter that could place him in history.
But politics has a bad habit: it rarely stays where it starts. Just a few weeks later, the president would make one of the most dangerous decisions of his term, ordering the bombing of Iran. There was a belief in the White House that the strike could bring a quick and decisive result. Netanyahu had argued that eliminating Ayatollah Khamenei could bring to its knees in a matter of days an adversary who for decades had built his political identity on the clash with the United States.
It didn't happen that way.
What was supposed to be a show of force turned into the beginning of a series of problems that would follow the administration in the months to come.
Trump had returned to power with a strong mandate and the promise that this time he would govern without hesitation. One of the areas where he decided to immediately invest political capital was tariffs.
The idea was simple: more tariffs on imports, more revenue for the state, more manufacturing within America. In the most ambitious version of this policy, Trump also talked about a system where tariff revenue could significantly reduce dependence on federal taxes. But the economy did not obey the scenario. The tariffs did not bring the expected revenues or the revival of industry on the scale that the administration had promised. On the contrary, the pressure on prices began to be felt more and more, while the case ended up in the Supreme Court, which later declared the measures illegal.
At the same time, Trump was trying to make good on another big campaign promise: the war in Ukraine. During the presidential race, he had said he could end the conflict within 24 hours. In August, a summit in Alaska with Vladimir Putin was presented as a moment that could pave the way for a deal. Trump continued to see Putin as a leader with whom he could negotiate personally. With Volodymyr Zelensky, he had had a much cooler relationship, even public clashes in the Oval Office.
But here too, the result did not come as quickly as promised.
Çmimi i karburantit u rrit.
Lufta me Iranin ndikonte te çmimet.
At the start of his term, Trump had received news that the economy was growing faster than expected and had thought that history was smiling on him. Just a few months later, he entered the midterm elections with a much more polarized America, with a new war abroad, with the cost of living once again at the center of the debate and with divisions that had penetrated even into his own camp. Trump had wanted the elections to be a referendum on his presidency. In the end, that is what it is./ La Repubblica
