A spectacular escape occurred on Friday evening in Greece, during the transfer of a prisoner from Nigrita Prison to Serres General Hospital. The incident occurred at around 23:30, in the hospital courtyard, near the psychiatric wing, where the transport vehicle was located with the prisoner and the two employees accompanying him.
According to preliminary information, two vehicles with lights resembling police cars appeared at the scene. The people in them approached the prison vehicle and, at gunpoint, neutralized the escort.
The gunmen then helped the prisoner escape from the scene. During their escape, they allegedly took the service weapon of one of the prison employees. After that, the perpetrators fled in their vehicles and disappeared. The fugitive is a 41-year-old Albanian citizen. He was arrested last year by Organized Crime officers on suspicion of attempted murder in Thessaloniki, following an incident in a canteen.
According to information, the 41-year-old was also suspected of involvement in cases related to weapons and drug trafficking. After the escape, Greek authorities launched a large-scale search operation to capture the Albanian and the armed men who organized and carried out the escape. In the meantime, investigations are ongoing to clarify how the intervention was organized and the identities of the people who participated in it.
