SCENARIOS/ Who will form Israel's new government?

Israel's future hung in the balance on Wednesday as it became clear that Benjamin Netanyahu had lost his governing majority. His political fate now hinges on the readiness of Jewish opposition parties to form a united front with Palestinian parties, whose support rose sharply in Tuesday's elections.

The leader of the Jewish opposition bloc, retired general Gadi Eisenkot, appeared to rule out such a broad coalition in a premature overnight declaration of victory for what he called a "Zionist majority."

As vote counting continued on Wednesday, initial poll predictions that Eisenkot's bloc would have a narrow lead over Netanyahu's coalition were increasingly cast in doubt as the prime minister's bloc surged ahead, with votes from deployed soldiers and other mail-in ballots - about 14% of the total electorate - still not fully counted.

With 86% of the votes counted, the two Jewish blocs appear certain to fall short of the 61 Knesset seats needed for a majority government, leaving Eisenkot and his allies with a clear choice: either make a pact with the Arab-Israeli parties that have secured a record 16-19 seats, or give Netanyahu a political lifeline in the form of new elections or a unity government.

On Wednesday evening, Netanyahu reacted to the high Palestinian turnout and the success of Arab-Israeli parties by claiming that they had “stolen the elections.” He offered no evidence, but wrote in X that his Likud party had sent “hundreds of testimonies and evidence” to the central election committee and the Shin Bet internal security agency.

Both agencies have been politicized under Netanyahu's government. The Electoral Committee had sought to ban Arab-Israeli parties before the elections, but the attempt to exclude them was overturned by the country's supreme court.

Donald Trump took credit for Netanyahu's better-than-expected performance, claiming that his outspoken support in the run-up to the election had made the difference. "When the support came, it helped him a lot," Trump said, adding that the outcome appeared to be heading towards a deadlock or a Netanyahu victory.

Yair Golan, leader of the center-left Democrats, a junior partner in Eisenkot's "Change" bloc, urged the latter to negotiate with the two Palestinian parties, the Joint List and Ra'am (United Arab List).

"We must do everything we can, certainly after yesterday, to avoid another round of elections," he said.

The election took place in the midst of Israel's war in Gaza - barely mentioned during the campaign, despite the fact that Israel has been accused of committing genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, and Netanyahu is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes.

A UN commission of human rights experts reported on Monday that Israel had continued to commit genocidal acts against Palestinian civilians in Gaza after the declaration of a ceasefire in October 2025. Since then, 1,431 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military, including 300 children.

The report, by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, said: “Israeli authorities and forces continue to commit genocidal acts with genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in Gaza.”

Israel's UN ambassador, Daniel Meron, dismissed the report as an "attempt to destroy the Jewish state" and "to undermine Israel's legitimacy and deny its fundamental right to exist and defend itself."

Eisenkot and most of his bloc support the war in Gaza and called for the election to be a referendum on Netanyahu. Voter turnout was nearly 78%, the highest since 1999, with a significant increase in the number of serving military personnel who voted.

Political deadlock has led to repeated elections in the past. Between 2019 and 2022, Israel held five elections.

Netanyahu is Israel's longest-serving prime minister, ruling for 19 of the past 30 years, and its most steadfast political survivor. Embroiled in a long corruption trial, he and his far-right coalition have stoked xenophobic fears and suggested that Israel would be vulnerable to a nuclear attack without him.

The campaign, feverish even by Israeli standards, included Netanyahu posting a photo of a nuclear explosion destroying Tel Aviv on the eve of the opening of polling stations.

Since the deadly attack launched by Hamas on southern Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, Israel has devastated Gaza and killed more than 74,000 Palestinians, fought Hezbollah in Lebanon, seized new territory in Syria and launched a war alongside the US against Iran. ©Taken from The Guardian, prepared in Albanian by LAPSI.al
