Clashes broke out during demonstrations against a luxury construction project by a company owned by US President Donald Trump's son-in-law in Albania.
Police prevented protesters from advancing towards Parliament on Tuesday evening. They pelted police officers with eggs and tomatoes and demanded the arrest of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Police escorted the MPs on their way to Parliament and back.
Several protesters were detained. Initially, however, it was not clear whether anyone had been arrested.
100 days of protests against luxury construction project
The protests are against a real estate project on the Adriatic coast, in which a company owned by Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is involved.
Critics say the project will damage the environment and limit public access to the sea. Protesters' banners feature a pink flamingo, which could be endangered by the project. This has given the protests the nickname "Flamingo Revolution."
Tuesday was the 100th day of demonstrations.
Initially, the protests were about environmental issues related to the construction project, but they have since become more broadly directed against political issues and against Prime Minister Rama, who explicitly supports the construction project. The demonstrations have attracted attention around the world.
The luxury project consists of two parts: a small resort on the island of Sazan, a former uninhabited military base dating back to the communist period, and a construction complex in a coastal area near the Narta Lagoon, which until now is under nature protection and is home to wetland species such as flamingos.
The project includes hotels, apartments, villas and a marina for yachts.
