"The rusty cargo ship is anchored in the harbor. The pier is packed with men and women. A desperate Tetris of flesh and sweat, their eyes eager for the future. Hundreds of others watch from the barns, a volcano of human lava erupting."
Thus begins a long report by the renowned Italian newspaper "La Stampa" dedicated to the 20 thousand Albanian immigrants of the ship "Vlora" that arrived in the port of Bari in August 1991. The article echoes what is happening in Ceuta, Spain with immigrants, as a reminder that those who were once seen as barbarians have today become part of Italian society.
"La Stampa" has interviewed the children of those who were on the Vlora ship. Klea Meksi says she often turns that photo over in her hands and tries to find her parents. "Impossible, they didn't find themselves in the middle of that biblical exodus either," she smiles. The image was taken on the morning of August 8, 1991, when the Vlora landed in Bari with its cargo of 20,000 Albanians. No luggage with her, just a mixture of despair and hope.
Like a mosaic
Klea's parents were aboard the Vlora ship, and over the years she has pieced together that story like a mosaic. "As a child, I would hear fragments of discussions and stories," she recalls.
"For my parents, it was a long journey. They had survived a traumatic event and were probably trying to protect themselves." Today, a history student in Bologna, she is 24, the same age as her mother when she pinned her hopes on that ship carrying sugar from Cuba, which was attacked in the port of Durres by a people now liberated from the isolationist madness of Enver Hoxha.
Every August 8, the anniversary of that epic landing, Klea celebrates the anniversary on social media with a story or testimony: "For me, it's a source of pride; it's part of my identity. It's a story that's both personal and universal," she emphasizes.
“They are people”
Aron Beu is also a "son of Vlora". In 1991, his father, Arturi, was a minor and was accompanied to the port by his father. "I have thought many times about the dramatic situations he experienced. There were gangs of criminals on the ship and he had to survive. Upon arrival, he found prejudice and a state that wanted to expel Albanians", - he says.
Looking at images of Vlora from 35 years ago, I almost automatically associate them with ships sailing the Mediterranean from the coast of Africa, pursuing the European dream. "People are often dehumanized," Klea reasons. "Even Vlora was described as an 'attack' and 'barbarians,' without considering that behind those 20,000 faces were people with their own stories." This reflection is made even more important by the events in Ceuta, which have revived the narrative of the invasion.
What was learned?
35 years later, has Italy learned the lesson of hospitality?
"I'm afraid not," adds the 24-year-old. "When I first heard about re-emigration, I was scared. Unfortunately, there is an increasingly extreme polarization on immigration issues."
Aron, who now studies law at the University of Tirana, agrees: "These racist and intolerant arguments are ideological traps used by politicians to gain easy control over those who are not capable of critical thinking."

The suspicion that the Vlora lesson has remained a dead letter comes from the words of Davide, a Bocconi graduate who does not hide his fascination with Vannacci's ideas. But how do they reconcile them with his father's experience in that historic landing? "Simply, Albanians had a lot in common with Italians. Those who arrive today do not, starting from the color of their skin." ©Taken from La Stampa, adapted into Albanian by LAPSI.al
