Austrian MEP turns to Rama: Protesting is European

Another member of the European Parliament has reacted to the violence of the Albanian police against protesters and the statements of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Austrian MEP Thomas Waitz has rejected and called untrue Rama's statement in international media that the protests are harming Albania's integration into the EU.

In a Facebook reaction, Waitz, part of the "Greens" group, says that protesting for institutions that are capable and willing to fight corruption is pro-European.

"Let me be clear. Protesting for institutions that are capable and willing to fight corruption is pro-European. Protesting for proper education is pro-European. And protesting for the protection of natural heritage is pro-European.

After 13 years in government, Edi Rama tells the protesters that they are in foreign hands. That he will not allow them free education and scholarships. He is shooting them with gas and water cannon and imprisoning minors. And this is absolutely not in line with European values.

"We all want to see Albania in the EU as a state that respects human rights, as a state where the law rules, protects nature, listens to its citizens and the right to demonstrate. This is the journey towards the EU and we hope that Albania will be ready," he says in his video message.

The Austrian MEP titled the video message 'Albania is not for sale', also tagging Prime Minister Edi Rama. /LAPSI.al

Six decisions signed by the AMA on October 30, for alleged violations of ethical standards and broadcasting statements that, according to the authority, incite hatred or justify violence. The fines have opened a debate on the limits of freedom of expression and the responsibility of television stations, while journalists see them as a form of pressure that risks encouraging self-censorship in studios and editorial offices.
