A thermometer breaks at home. The silver droplets scatter on the floor and the remains end up in the trash. But the danger doesn't disappear: some of the mercury can remain in the cracks in the floor, while the rest ends up in the environment.
Once upon a time, children played with these shiny dots. Today we know that mercury, or mercury, releases toxic, invisible and odorless vapors even at room temperature. Inhaling them can damage the nervous system, kidneys and, at high exposures, the lungs. The risk depends on the amount and duration of exposure; a broken thermometer does not automatically mean poisoning, but it does require caution.
In the environment, mercury can pass through the food chain and accumulate in fish. The developing nervous system of children is particularly vulnerable, including during pregnancy.
Albania towards mercury-free devices
WHO, in collaboration with ministries responsible for the environment and health, is supporting the gradual replacement of thermometers and blood pressure monitors with mercury-free alternatives.
The project, funded by GEF and in collaboration with UNEP, includes pilot facilities in Dibër, Vlorë and Gjirokastër. In addition to replacing equipment, it includes staff training and safe waste management.
If a mercury thermometer breaks
Remove children and pets. Open windows and close doors to other rooms.
Do not use a vacuum cleaner or regular broom: they spread mercury.
Do not touch it with bare hands and do not pour it down the sink or toilet.
For the amount of a thermometer on a smooth floor, use gloves, cardboard, and a dropper for collection. Isolate waste in a sealed container; do not throw it in the regular trash.
Seek guidance from local authorities on waste disposal and specialized assistance if mercury has gotten into carpets or cracks.
After thorough cleaning, ventilate the area for at least 24 hours and keep children away. If health concerns arise, seek medical attention immediately.
