Massive brawl, match ends with 53 red cards: new world record set

A youth football match turned into a real battle, setting a record that is expected to cause much discussion. In Brazil, the semi-final of the Second Division of the Under-20 Championship of Minas Gerais, between Uberlândia and Mamoré, was characterized by a massive brawl that led to the expulsion of 53 people, including players, technical staff members and managers of both clubs.

The match, held at Parque do Sabiá, spiraled out of control towards the end, when the tension built up during the match erupted into a violent brawl. The overall tally is extraordinary: 43 players, eight technical staff members and two officials received red cards. A total of 50 of the 53 dismissals came precisely as a result of the brawl that broke out in extra time.

The spark after Mamoré's goal

The match had been particularly tense from the start. Before the decisive incident, referee Fernando Patrick had issued four other red cards, two for each team. Among the reasons for these previous dismissals were violent behavior, punching, disrespect and interference with opponents. The situation finally got out of control after Mamoré's goal, scored in the 54th minute of the second half, which sealed the final score 3-1. During the celebration, Davi Bittencourt allegedly made provocative gestures towards the Uberlândia bench, accompanied by insults and offensive expressions.

This behavior provoked a reaction from the opponents. Within moments, several players abandoned their positions to engage in a massive brawl, which was also joined by members of the technical staff and club directors. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, turning the field into an arena of kicks, punches and attacks.

According to the referee's report, 39 other players were sent off for their involvement in the brawl, bringing the total number of players shown red cards to 43. Only two of them, Luike Bispo dos Santos and Roberto Domingos dos Santos, managed to escape expulsion.

New world record

The consequences were not limited to the players. The coaches and several members of the technical staff also ended up in the referee's report, along with two club directors. The referee explained that, due to the chaos, it had not been physically possible to show the red card to all the people responsible during the fight. For this reason, the sending-offs were later recorded in the official match report. The event set an extraordinary record for the number of people sent off in a single match, significantly exceeding the previous historical figure. In February 2011, the fifth-tier derby in Argentina between Atlético Claypole and Victoriano Arenas had ended with 36 players sent off.

The case in Brazil has crossed a line that seemed almost unattainable. It is a new world record for sending-offs, but it remains to be seen whether it will be officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records. The event could also bring other consequences in terms of disciplinary and judicial aspects, as the police could launch verifications for the violence that broke out during the match. An Under 20 semi-final, which was supposed to be remembered for the sporting result, thus turned into one of the most incredible and unpleasant episodes in the history of football: 53 sending-offs and a massive brawl in which almost all the protagonists of the match were involved.
