Student protests in Tirana/ German MEP Michael Gahler: Citizens are protesting

German MEP Michael Gahler, foreign policy spokesperson for the European People's Party Group in the European Parliament, has reacted to the student protests in Albania. Through a post on social media, he raised concerns about corruption and the functioning of the state.

Gahler, who led the European Parliament election observer delegation in Albania, stated that during his engagement he witnessed connections between the state, the ruling party and organized crime.

Michael Gahler says that Albanian citizens have been protesting against corruption and the government for a long time. According to him, these concerns are very important because they are directly related to Albania's path towards integration into the European Union.

Michael Gahler: Leading the European Parliament (EP) election observer delegation, I witnessed the links between the state, the ruling party and organised crime. I have seen how long citizens have been protesting against corruption and the government, raising concerns that touch the very core of Albania's European integration prospects.
