Emergency teams have rescued a Chinese man and a Nepalese woman in two separate operations in the search for thousands of people missing 10 days after massive floods hit Nepal.
The Nepalese military said on Saturday that a joint team of personnel from its own army and South Korean disaster experts rescued the man from a 225-meter tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydroelectric project. He was undergoing a medical evaluation. Photos showed him being evacuated by helicopter after being pulled out of the tunnel.
Rescue efforts have focused on a hydroelectric project where about 900 workers are missing, 500 of whom are believed to be trapped in large tunnels. International rescue teams from India, China, South Korea and the United States have been searching through the rubble and damaged structures at the projects for survivors.
Two Nepalese workers were rescued from another tunnel at a hydroelectric power plant on the Trishul River on Friday. Experts say the chances of finding people alive in the tunnels are dwindling.
The Nepalese woman, 64, was rescued from a damaged house in the devastated city of Nuwakot. Photos released by the Nepalese army showed rescuers discovering the woman buried in mud before she was pulled to safety and airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment.
Rescue teams have been working to find survivors from devastating floods in Nepal, which were caused by the collapse of glaciers and rocks on August 26. At least 1,375 people have died in the floods, while more than 5,000 others are missing. ©LAPSI.al
