A decisive moment for Albania

It is the first time that Albanians feel they can shape the national debate without waiting for political parties to take the lead. Experience teaches us that democracy depends not only on elections, but also on active citizenship among them.

NAMES/ Who is being mentioned for president of Kosovo

Names for the new president of Kosovo begin to circulate, but the LVV-LDK agreement is still missing.

Names for the next president of Kosovo have begun to circulate on the political scene, but despite discussions about the profile that the new head of state should have, an agreement between the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic League of Kosovo is still missing.

Kosovo has been left with an acting president for four months, while there is still no agreement among political entities on the election of a new president. This issue has also affected the process of constituting the Assembly and forming a new government.

But, what are the names that have been mentioned so far for the position of president?

Professor Ibrahim Berisha and the former Speaker of the Assembly in 1990, Ilaz Ramajli , have denied their involvement in this process.

On the other hand, the leader of AAK, Ramush Haradinaj , has proposed the name of former president Hashim Thaçi for return to this post.

The name of former President Fatmir Sejdiu has also been mentioned as a possibility for a return to the Presidency.

Meanwhile, LVV and LDK have held meetings to discuss the principles of cooperation. After the last meeting, both parties stated that they did not discuss specific names of presidential candidates.

Political analyst Dritëro Arifi estimates that no serious name would accept the presidential candidacy without knowing in advance what agreement the LVV and LDK would reach on key political issues.

"Mentioning names without confirmation, that is, public, is in some way damaging the reputation of potential presidents," Arifi declared.

According to him, a serious candidate should know what policies the parties have agreed on and what role the president will have in relation to important state issues.

"A serious intellectual should know what policies the parties have agreed on for the proposed name. Will there be an agreement on gas, on the suspension of the strategic dialogue? What does it have to do with the Ohrid agreement? So, there are some very serious and national policies that the president should know how to handle," Arifi told Radio Free Europe.

After meeting with the leader of the LDK, Lumir Abdixhiku , the acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti , stated that he wants the next president to be a person with integrity, values and contribution to society.

On the other hand, the LDK has made it known that it does not want a president who would be just a formal figure, but a personality who would exercise his duty with dignity and responsibility.

At the next meeting between political entities, possible candidacies for the new president of Kosovo are also expected to be discussed. /Taken from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
