Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced that he will resign from office on September 27. He said that during the evening of that day he will address the citizens to thank them for their support during his years in office.
"I want to inform you that on September 27th I will resign from the post of president. That evening I will address the citizens and thank them for their support," Vučić declared during an interview with Pink television.
Vučić said that he has served Serbia and its citizens with dedication, emphasizing that he has been the president who has remained in office the longest since the establishment of the multi-party system in the country.
During the interview, the Serbian president also spoke about the student protests and the Student List, claiming that the former head of the Democratic Party, Bojan Pajtic, and its former deputy president, Dusan Petrovic, are politically behind it.
He also repeated his claims that the story about the use of a “sonic cannon” during the March 15, 2025 protest in Belgrade was fabricated. According to Vučić, the audio recording published in connection with this event was also manipulated to create the impression of the use of such a device.
Vučić also accused individuals who, according to him, have organized a "revolution" in Serbia from abroad, claiming that their goal was to deepen social divisions and destabilize the country, to the point of risking a civil conflict.
The resignation announcement comes during a tense political period in Serbia, where student protests and clashes between the government and the opposition have continued for months.
A few days ago, Vučić signed the decree dissolving Parliament and set October 25 as the date for holding early parliamentary elections.
