Greek authorities have asked the European Parliament to lift the immunity from criminal prosecution of PASOK socialist MEP Nikos Papandreou.
The request was announced on Monday by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, who did not specify the reason for the proceeding. According to her, the matter will initially be examined by the European Parliament's legal services.
Close associates of Papandreou said the procedure is related to “a routine work dispute.” They added that the 69-year-old welcomes the process and expresses full confidence in its outcome.
The decision on whether the MEP's immunity will be lifted is expected to be made by a European Parliament committee, in accordance with the relevant procedures.
Nikos Papandreou is the son of the late PASOK founder and former Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, as well as the brother of former Prime Minister George Papandreou.
He has been a member of the European Parliament since May 2023.
