George Desmond Kamurasi could soon move from goalkeeper's gloves to a royal crown. The 36-year-old captain of English ninth-tier club SE Dons has been named as the successor to his cousin Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV as the ruler of the Tooro kingdom in Uganda.
The news comes after a surreal weekend for goalkeeper Kamurasi, who on Saturday took to the pitch regularly and contributed to SE Dons' 2-0 victory over Erith Town in the FA Cup. Just hours earlier, however, his name had officially entered the discussion for the successor to the crown of one of the traditional kingdoms still recognized in Uganda.
Kamuras is elected successor to the throne of Tooro
The decision was made on September 4, when a 21-member committee designated Kamurasi as the successor to Oyo, who died on August 27 at the age of 34 after a long illness. His cousin had assumed the title Omukama of Tooro in 1995, when he was just three years old, making him the youngest reigning sovereign in the world at the time.
Kamurasi is a member of the Babiito royal family, but his personal story has been largely set in the United Kingdom. Raised in England and living in southeast London with his wife and son, he is known in the amateur football world as “Big G.” He also holds the role of captain at SE Dons, living a life far removed from what he might expect in Uganda.
Oyo's funeral is scheduled for September 12, and the formal succession is expected to take place only after the burial. Thus, a whole new chapter will open for Kamurasi, in which his British experience will be intertwined with the roots of the Toro royal family.
From English football to the crown: an unusual story
Kamurasi's potential new role also has special meaning for Tooro, one of the four traditional kingdoms still recognized by Uganda. Local monarchies were abolished in 1967 and restored in 1993. However, the 1995 Constitution stipulated that sovereigns have exclusively cultural and representative functions, without executive, legislative or administrative powers.
The Tooro Kingdom is based in Fort Portal, in western Uganda, and represents a community of about 800,000 people. During his reign, Oyo had paid special attention to issues such as education, agriculture, health and youth. The choice of Kamurasi inevitably opens up a reflection on the distance between his British upbringing and the role he may be called upon to play.
What makes this story even more special is the timing. Oyo's funeral will take place on the same day that SE Dons are expected to be involved in another cup match. An almost surreal coincidence for a man who, in a matter of days, could find himself faced with the choice between his ordinary life as an amateur footballer and the obligations that come with his new position in the royal family.
Before the crown, however, is football. And for now, Kamuras remains above all the “Big G”, the goalkeeper and captain of SE Dons who could become one of the most special sovereigns of the contemporary panorama.
