Serbian Prime Minister Gjuro Macut has sent the country's President, Aleksandar Vučić, a request to dissolve the Parliament, a procedure that precedes the announcement of parliamentary elections.
According to the Constitution of Serbia, the president can dissolve the Assembly upon a reasoned proposal from the Government.
At the same time as the dissolution of the Assembly, the country's president announces parliamentary elections, which must be completed no later than 60 days from the date of their announcement.
The dissolved parliament can only conduct regular or urgent business, as determined by law. The parliamentary elections were previously announced by President Vučić, who had said they would be held on October 18 or 25.
Early elections have been called since May 2025 by students who have been blocking faculties and leading protests against the government for months. These protests have sought responsibility for the deaths of 16 people in an incident at the Novi Sad Railway Station in November 2024.
Government representatives have repeatedly announced the announcement of elections, while President Vučić has also declared that he will step down from the post of president before the end of his term in April 2027.
Meanwhile, his party's assembly, a few days ago, unanimously approved Vučić as the sole candidate for the country's prime minister in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
