The Secretary General of the Democratic Party, Flamur Noka, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, and the Chairman of the Human Rights Commission, Jorida Tabaku, held a meeting with Mr. Paulo Zampolli, the Special Envoy of the President of the United States of America for Global Partnerships.
During the meeting, the representatives of the Democratic Party conveyed the unwavering position of the DP on strengthening the strategic partnership with the United States of America and expressed its support for the administration of President Donald Trump.
The meeting discussed extensively the political, institutional and economic situation in Albania, as well as the challenges that, according to the opposition, are undermining democracy, the rule of law and the normal functioning of institutions.
The representatives of the DP emphasized that organized crime and corruption have created an unfavorable climate for foreign investments and have damaged the trust of international partners in the country. In this context, they underlined the need for an Albania where the rule of law, fair competition and legal certainty are guarantees for every investor and citizen.
Particular attention was paid to the opposition’s concern about the concentration of power and political control over institutions. The representatives of the Democratic Party argued that Edi Rama’s government has created a system where the boundaries between powers have been weakened and where justice is prevented from doing its job independently.
During the meeting, what the representatives of the Democratic Party described as the “Soros agenda” in Albania was also discussed. According to them, this agenda has directly influenced the political and institutional developments of the country and has violated the principles on which a consolidated democracy and a functional legal state should function.
In this context, the representatives of the DP raised concerns about the standards of elections in Albania, emphasizing that free and fair elections remain one of the fundamental conditions for restoring citizens’ trust in institutions. They denounced the use of illicit funds, the misuse of public administration for electoral purposes and the links between politics and organised crime as factors that, in their opinion, distort the will of citizens.
The representatives of the Democratic Party stressed that Albania needs a profound political and institutional change, which restores accountability, the separation and balance of powers, political competition and the integrity of electoral processes.
Mr. Paulo Zampolli expressed his readiness for close cooperation with the Albanian opposition and to help Albania move forward in its democratic processes.
The Democratic Party reiterated at the meeting that it will continue to stand by the Albanian citizens, in defense of democracy, the rule of law and the national interest, as well as in the function of strengthening strategic relations with the United States of America and our historical allies.
