Just a month after approving them, Trump "freezes" new sanctions

US President Donald Trump has decided to suspend the implementation of a new package of economic sanctions against Russia, just a month after signing the law that provided for their imposition. The decision, taken on Friday, October 16, is argued to be in the national interest of the United States and comes at a time when Washington is trying to curb the rise in energy prices, while the war in Ukraine continues.

Trump's executive order suspends the implementation of some economic measures provided for in the law on sanctions against Russia and Iran, which the US president signed on September 18. The legislation was passed with broad bipartisan support in the US Congress and aimed to limit the revenue that Moscow uses to finance its military operations in Ukraine.

However, the Trump administration has shown little willingness to implement the new measures, despite pressure from U.S. lawmakers and calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to increase economic pressure on Russia. With the latest decision, Trump is using a provision of the law that allows him to suspend some of the sanctions, provided he can argue in writing to Congress that doing so serves the U.S. national interest. The suspension does not automatically mean the lifting of sanctions previously imposed on Moscow.

The Russian oil deal and the aim to lower prices

The decision comes after Trump announced a deal with Russia to supply large quantities of oil. According to the US president, Moscow has agreed to initially provide more than 300,000 tons of oil, with deliveries to continue in the coming months.

Trump's plan calls for another 500,000 tons in November, an additional 1 million tons after that, and another 3 million tons at a later date. The White House has presented the deal as an effort to rein in fuel prices and ease pressure on international energy markets.

However, the rapprochement in the energy sector has drawn criticism in the US. Opponents of this approach argue that increasing Russian oil exports could provide Moscow with additional revenue at a time when Ukraine is seeking to limit the financial resources supporting the war. The developments have also prompted bipartisan reactions in Congress, with some lawmakers demanding that Washington maintain economic pressure on the Kremlin.

Domestic pressures and the US elections

The issue of sanctions against Russia has also gained importance in the American political debate, ahead of the midterm elections, scheduled for November 3. The Trump administration is facing pressure to reduce energy costs, while part of Congress is demanding tougher measures against Moscow.

The suspension of new sanctions highlights the differences between those seeking to increase economic pressure on Russia and the approach of the US president, who is placing importance on cooperation in the energy sector and stabilizing fuel prices. Despite the decision, the new sanctions remain an instrument that the US administration can use in the future. For now, Trump has chosen not to activate some of the additional restrictions, without lifting the existing measures against Russia.
