Another strong earthquake has struck Panama, adding to concerns after days of high seismic activity. According to the Geoscience Institute of the University of Panama, the tremor was registered at 6:20 p.m. with a magnitude of 6.4. The epicenter was off the southern coast of Veraguas province, at a depth of just 2 kilometers. The EMSC and USGS have estimated the magnitude at 6.1. The earthquake comes after a powerful 7.7-magnitude tremor on Friday, which was followed by more than 300 aftershocks.
No casualties were reported from the first earthquake, but 27 people were injured and about 900 homes were damaged. Damage was also recorded in infrastructure, while the government declared a state of emergency. Authorities continue to check the most affected areas, especially in remote communities, where the damage balance could increase.
