The international news agency Reuters has paid attention to the protests in Albania, where thousands of citizens, including students, have taken to the streets demanding accountability from the government and the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Reuters reports that the protests in Tirana have been accompanied by clashes between demonstrators and police. During the rallies, law enforcement used tear gas, stun grenades and water cannons to disperse the crowd.
Reuters writes that the dissatisfaction is related to several issues, from accusations of corruption and problems in the education system, to objections to developments on the southern coast. Protesters claim that their demands have not been taken seriously, despite rallies held in recent months. After the clashes, in some areas of the capital there were burned trash cans, damaged bus stops and broken traffic lights. On the other hand, Rama has rejected demands for resignation. In a written statement to Reuters, he said that he is ready to listen to the concerns of citizens, but ruled out the possibility of leaving office. The prime minister stressed that his responsibility is to address reasonable concerns and continue working for the progress of the country.
