Former Socialist MP Paulin Sterkaj has reacted to the protests in Tirana, criticizing the institutions' approach to the crisis and emphasizing that the State Police and RENEA forces cannot replace the political solution.
In his response, he emphasizes that police interventions must be necessary, proportionate and in accordance with the law. He underlines that violence and destruction of property are unacceptable, but even these acts cannot justify the unlimited use of force by the state.
"The State Police cannot be kept indefinitely under the pressure of a crisis that stems from politics. Our officers cannot be asked to deal with the anger of citizens day after day, while the causes of this anger remain unanswered."
"RENEA is not a political solution. It is a structure with special responsibilities, the use of which in protest situations must be justified by concrete need, be proportional and in accordance with the law. Its engagement is not a decision without institutional, professional and public consequences," he emphasizes.
The former MP also addresses the government, emphasizing that political and social dissatisfaction cannot be resolved through public order measures alone, but requires dialogue and political responsibility.
As a socialist, he calls on the leaders and representatives of the Socialist Party to listen to citizens, especially young people.
"When protests express deep political and social discontent, the government must have the courage to listen, understand and respond to them. It is not enough to demand calm in the streets if it does not create a political way out of the crisis," he adds.
Full reaction:
The police cannot solve a political crisis. And RENEA cannot become its instrument.
I have served for many years in the State Police and in the leadership of special forces. I know firsthand the responsibility of those who wear the uniform, the difficulty of dealing with tense situations, and the weight of every order given in the field.
Precisely for this reason, I feel compelled to speak out.
The State Police cannot be held indefinitely under the pressure of a crisis that stems from politics. Our officers cannot be asked to deal with the anger of citizens day after day, while the causes of this anger remain unanswered.
RENEA is not a political solution. It is a structure with special responsibilities, the use of which in protest situations must be justified by concrete need, be proportionate and in accordance with the law. Its engagement is not a decision without institutional, professional and public consequences.
I have always been vocal within the structures. Today I do not want protagonism at my age and work.
But it is time to clearly distance ourselves from any behavior that violates the trust of citizens, to courageously defend the real achievements of the Socialist Party and not allow them to be devalued by mistakes, arrogance or the interests of individuals. Defending the party does not mean defending every action of it or the government, it means having the courage to correct it when necessary. Albania does not need a battle that further divides society, but for a shared responsibility that avoids polarization and prevents destabilization.
Silence may seem like a temporary protection, but it is not a solution. Today, the responsibility of each of us is to simultaneously protect the dignity of the party, the public interest, and the democratic stability of the country.
